After watching the twenty works nominated for this year's competition the ones that left the strongest impression were those which made good use of intense and compelling “raw ingredients” and those in which the ingredients had been carefully “cooked”.
While “Between Showers” (IWASAKI Hirotoshi) did not employ novel methods of animation it was awarded the Grand Prize in recognition of its use of ink drawing and the beauty of empty space. The expression of falling rain without it actually being shown was also intriguing.
“Baba's Rock” (YASUDA Satoru), a very different sort of work, was awarded the Terayama Shuji Prize for the filmmaker's selection and unwavering depiction of a subject who leaves a lasting impression on viewers and is herself a character that would not seem out of place in one of Terayama Shuji's films.
An Award for Excellence was given to “Experiment for Animated Graphic Score” (YOSHIDA Haruka) for its exploration of the visualization of sound compositions which cannot be expressed with traditional musical notation. “onde” (SHIMADA Ryohei) was recognized for being rich in fascinating content which could only have been expressed through the moving image. Its colours, flickering between light and shadow, blown-up images of plants, and high-volume noise were all compelling. “Graduation” (OTA Shingo) was a fake documentary which relentlessly pursued a depiction of the emotional turmoil of young people. It was at times well made and at other times quite awkward but it left a strong impression of the painful (and painful to watch) struggling of today's young people who must move forward in life even if they are not mature enough to do so.
