『パターン』 はじっと凝視するように撮影された3つのポートレートの集成で、複雑な継手を作る木工職人、手造りの多面体ドームの制作者、松の成長をコントロールして形作る庭師が登場する。彼らは自分自身にとって身近で、直感的に理解しているものを作り、構想し、表現している。
身体、手、身振り、視線に焦点を当てるこの作品は、被写体が作業に完全に没入していることを強調し、見る者を同じ没入的で瞑想的な「時間外の時間」 に引き込む。

‘Pattern’ is a suite of three intently observed portraits; of a woodworker making a complex joint, the maker of a hand-built geodesic dome and a gardener shaping the future growth of a tree, as they make, envisage, and describe things they are intimately close to and understand intuitively.
Focusing on bodies, hands, gestures, and glances ‘Pattern’ emphasises the subjects’ complete absorption in their tasks and draws the viewer into that same immersive, meditative ‘time out of time’.

『化石』はロンドンのロイヤル・アカデミー・オブ・アーツ（RA）で3年間かけて撮影された16ミリ作品である。この映画は、RAの歴史的な建築用鋳物のとてつもないコレクションを中心にとらえている。それは、アンティークの柱、柱頭、帯状の彫刻などの複製品で、絵の教育に使われていたが、50年もの間、仮設スタジオの壁の裏にしまわれていた。
白黒で撮影された画像の粒状性が、漆喰の力強く埃で黒くなったテクスチャを反映し、露出したオブジェと、その不格好な取り外しを記録したシネマ・ヴェリテ調の映像に、光学的に焼き付けられたネガ画像がカラージェルによって鮮やかに色づけされている強烈なカラーのショットが挿入される。この断固とした物理的プロセスは、フィルム自体の物質性とフィルムの中の物質の重要性を強調する。巨大な石膏の鋳造、写真的複製、水彩の模写−それらすべてが複製物である。

‘FOSSIL’ is a 16mm film shot over three-years in the Royal Academy Schools, London. The film centres the RA’s extraordinary collection of historic architectural casts; copies of antique columns, capitals and friezes, used in the teaching of drawing but previously hidden behind temporary studio walls for 50 years.
Shot in black and white, in which the graininess of the image echoes the powered, dust blackened quality of the plaster casts, the verite style footage recording the revealing of the casts and their ungainly demounting is interrupted by intensely coloured sequences in which optically printed negative images are vividly tinted by colour gels. This resolutely physical process reinforces the centrality of the materiality of the film itself and of the materials in the film - all of them duplicates: the massive plaster casts, the photographic reproductions, and the watercolour copy.

グラハム・エラードとスティーブン・ジョンストンは30年近くにわたって主に16ミリフィルムで共同制作を行なっており、建築（典型的なモダニズム建築で多くは夢想的）を探求してきた。多くの場合、アーカイブ資料、図面、モデル、スタジオでの再現、 「メイキング」 作成と組み合わせて制作している。

Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone
They have worked together for almost 30 years, predominantly in 16mm film, to explore architecture - typically modernist and mostly ‘visionary’ - often combined with archive material, drawings, models, studio recreations and the activities of ‘making’.
At the centre of their films is a concern with the altered forms of attention, and the resulting intensity of looking, that comes from using a lens to frame and magnify details and fleeting atmospheric effects.
Their work has been shown in galleries and museums internationally, including Guggenheim New York; Anthology Film Archives, New York; MAXXI, Rome; Tate Britain; Tramway, Glasgow; Stroom Den Hague; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Triennale Design Museum Milan; MOMA, Sydney; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
